Understanding VA Math
Many veterans are surprised to learn that the VA doesn't simply add up their disability percentages. Instead, the VA uses a method called "VA Math" to combine ratings in a way that acknowledges that a veteran can't be more than 100% disabled.
How VA Math Works:
- Start with the highest disability rating
- Apply the next highest rating to what remains of the "non-disabled" veteran
- Continue with each rating in descending order
- Round the final combined rating to the nearest 10%
Example: A veteran with ratings of 50%, 30%, and 10% would be calculated as:
- Start with 50% disabled (50% well)
- Apply 30% to the remaining 50% well: 50% × 0.30 = 15%, bringing total to 50% + 15% = 65%
- Apply 10% to the remaining 35% well: 35% × 0.10 = 3.5%, bringing total to 65% + 3.5% = 68.5%
- Round to nearest 10%: 70% combined rating
This is why using our calculator is helpful—it automatically performs these calculations so you don't have to do the math manually.
About Disability Ratings
The VA rates disabilities on a scale of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%. These ratings are determined by VA Regional Offices based on:
- Medical evidence from your service
- Current medical examinations (C&P exams)
- VA disability rating schedules that describe each condition
- How your disabilities affect your daily life and work
Important Note: Your disability rating determines both your monthly compensation amount and your eligibility for additional benefits. Veterans rated 30% or higher receive additional compensation for dependents (spouse, children, parents).
2026 VA Disability Compensation
The VA adjusts disability compensation rates annually based on the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). The 2026 rates became effective December 1, 2025, and include a 2.8% increase over 2025 rates.
2026 VA Compensation Examples (Veteran with no dependents):
- 10% Rating: $180.42/month
- 30% Rating: $552.47/month
- 50% Rating: $1,132.90/month
- 70% Rating: $1,808.45/month
- 100% Rating: $3,938.58/month
Veterans rated 30% or higher also receive additional monthly compensation for qualifying dependents. The amounts vary by rating and family status.
