CRSC allows veterans on military retirement to receive additional VA disability compensation. You must be receiving military retirement to be eligible.
How CRSC Works
What is CRSC?
Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) is a monthly benefit for certain service members who are receiving military retirement pay and have service-connected disabilities rated by the VA. CRSC essentially allows you to receive both military retirement and VA disability compensation without the VA offset that normally applies.
CRSC Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for CRSC, you must meet ALL of these criteria:
- Be on military retirement (receiving military retirement pay)
- Have a service-connected disability rated by the VA
- Have a disability that was incurred or aggravated in combat or while on duty
- Apply for CRSC (it doesn't happen automatically)
Important: CRSC is specifically for service-connected disabilities that are combat-related. Not all disabilities qualify—only those that originated in combat or in direct support of combat operations.
Combat-Related Conditions
CRSC covers disabilities that are:
- Incurred in combat with an armed enemy
- Incurred in combat-related operations while on active duty
- Incurred as a direct result of armed conflict, operations, or events
- Aggravated in a combat zone or direct support area
How CRSC Amount is Determined
Your CRSC benefit amount is based on:
- Your VA combined disability rating
- Your family status (alone, with spouse, with dependents)
- Current VA disability compensation rates
- Which conditions are deemed combat-related
The amount is typically equivalent to the VA disability compensation you would receive based on your rating and family status.
CRSC vs. Concurrent Retired Greyhound Program (CRGP)
If you don't qualify for CRSC, you may qualify for the Concurrent Retired Greyhound Program (CRGP), which allows certain retirees to receive both military retirement and VA disability compensation. However, CRGP is being phased out for new applicants.
2026 VA Disability Rates for CRSC
CRSC payments are based on the 2026 VA disability compensation rates, which include a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) effective December 1, 2025.
Monthly CRSC Rates (Veteran Alone) - 2026
| VA Rating | Monthly CRSC |
|---|---|
| 10% | $180.42 |
| 20% | $356.66 |
| 30% | $552.47 |
| 40% | $795.84 |
| 50% | $1,132.90 |
| 60% | $1,435.02 |
| 70% | $1,808.45 |
| 80% | $2,102.15 |
| 90% | $2,362.30 |

Note: Veterans rated 30% or higher receive additional amounts for spouses and children. These amounts vary by rating level.
How to Apply for CRSC
To apply for Combat-Related Special Compensation:

Frequently Asked Questions About CRSC
What's the difference between CRSC and my regular VA disability compensation?
If you receive military retirement, you normally cannot receive both military retirement and VA disability compensation (called the "VA Offset"). CRSC allows you to receive both by providing the VA disability compensation amount as CRSC in addition to your military retirement. Without CRSC or CRGP, the VA would offset (reduce) one benefit by the other.
Do I automatically get CRSC if I'm eligible?
No. You must apply for CRSC. It doesn't happen automatically. Many eligible veterans don't receive CRSC because they haven't applied. If you're on military retirement with a service-connected disability, check with the VA about applying.
Will getting CRSC affect my military retirement?
No. CRSC is in addition to your military retirement pay. It doesn't reduce or affect your retirement in any way. You receive both full amounts.
What if some of my disabilities aren't combat-related?
You can have CRSC for your combat-related conditions while receiving normal VA disability compensation for other conditions. The VA will evaluate each condition to determine if it's combat-related.
Can I receive CRSC after retirement?
Yes. You don't have to apply while on active duty. Many veterans apply for CRSC years after retiring from the military. As long as you have military retirement and a service-connected disability rating, you may be eligible.
What if I'm rated at less than 10%?
Typically, CRSC is available only to veterans rated 10% or higher for combat-related conditions. Veterans with 0% ratings generally don't qualify for CRSC payments, though they may be eligible for VA healthcare and other benefits.
